“Management of natural resources and safeguarding of ecosystem services for sustainable rural development in the South Caucasus” (ECOserve) project
The main objective of the “Management of natural resources and safeguarding of ecosystem services for sustainable rural development in the South Caucasus” (ECOserve) Project which is financed by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Environmental programme in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia is:
The preconditions for the sustainable and biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources in the prevailing land-use systems in the South Caucasus are improved, with a particular focus on energy security for the rural population.
Approach:
In the three countries, a context-specific approach is being followed regarding the relevant land-use systems, considering, protection, safeguarding the rural population’s livelihood source, and the government’s priorities. In the case of Armenia, these are pasture ecosystems.
-This reflects the political dynamics in the countries. This will allow technical experts and decision-makers to develop policies, strategies and management practices in a better way. At the same time, the legal framework and administrative procedures will be adapted to promote a more sustainable management of the natural resources.
-In pilot areas, practices or innovations will be developed for improved landuse and more efficient use of natural resources for heating purposes.
– Education for the management level, for technical experts, and resource users will be improved to contribute to the more sustainable management of the natural resources. Awareness and education campaigns will be developed for the general public with a particular focus on the youth, to sensitize them to environmental issues. The regional exchange of experts of the three countries will be fostered, both directly and through the participation in international processes.
Pasture-related results:
- Improvement of the availability of data as a basis for decision-making for pastures and grassland
- Improvement of the institutional framework for SPM Development of replicable examples for improved pasture management
- Improvement of the education offer on NRM
- Development of replicable examples for EE\RE to reduce the use of firewood
- Improvement of the education offer on NRM
- Raising environmental awareness on NRM and rural energy
- Improvement of exchange between professionals of the 3 countries
